Physics

Physics is crucial to our understanding of the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us.

Physics encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. It challenges our imaginations with concepts like relativity and string theory, and its discoveries lead to technologies which change our lives – from computers and lasers, to experimental cancer therapies, to developing sustainable energy solutions.

As a Physics Major at Berea College, you can expect:

  • Opportunities for research both on and off campus;
  • A solid background in physics and mathematics that will prepare you for the job market or graduate school in physics or engineering;

Graduates receive a BA in Physics. We also offer a BS in Engineering Physics en route to a dual degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering program. A minor in Physics is also available

We work to develop well-rounded students who can write and speak about physics as well as they can experiment and perform theoretical calculations. We offer a very hands-on curriculum with active learning classrooms. Students also learn computational methods to simulate and model physics.

Careers

Opportunities

Berea College faculty conduct research with students in the summer through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects program on campus. Here is a recently published paper by Berea Physics students and faculty. In addition, students have been accepted to internships at national labs such as the Woods Hole Institute, Fermilab, and at national research universities.

Students have the opportunity to enhance their academic and professional skillsets by working as teaching assistants who coordinate and set up labs, tutor students in introductory physics courses and assist with outreach projects. There is also the chance to engage with the public while working at the Berea College Planetarium.

Careers & Outcomes

As a physics major, you will develop problem-solving, experimental and analytical skills that will prepare you for graduate work in the pure or applied sciences, engineering, or direct entry into the job market. Our recent graduates have gone on to careers as research scientists at national labs, as academic researchers and educators, as public servants, and into private industries as computer scientists, optical/civil/mechanical engineers, and molecular scientists.

My physics education at Berea lay a foundation for my success as an electrical engineering student at Kennesaw State University, and it continues to foster my success as an RF Electronics Engineer for the United States Air Force.
